The Trump administration is threatening to withdraw from the U.N. Human Rights Council, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has warned in a letter
According to Foreign Policy, Trump will depart the 47 member organization if the council can’t get their act together. The Council has a very small window of time to get its crap together according to Washington.
“If they don’t make these reforms, we’re going to question the value of our membership”, said a senior aide to Tillerson. “We’re not taking withdrawal off the table.”
Tillerson then explained in his letter that while the United States “continues to evaluate the effectiveness” of the Council it does not think that it addresses the human rights records of China, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
“We may not share a common view on this, given the makeup of the membership,” Tillerson told organizations. “While it may be the only such organization devoted to human rights, the Human Rights Council requires considerable reform in order for us to continue to participate.”
